Downloading BBC iPlayer programmes
Downloading is when you save a programme onto your computer or other compatible device from the website. Windows users can also download programmes and transfer them to certain phones and portable media players – this is known as sideloading.
To download regular and HD programmes to your computer you must first install BBC iPlayer Desktop. Further information can be found on Using BBC iPlayer for Windows and Macintosh OS.
In addition, certain mobile phones can stream programmes directly through 3G or wi-fi. Some phones also support downloads over wi-fi.
Radio programmes are not supported in BBC iPlayer just yet, but we are working on this.
You must be connected to the internet to download a programme, but you don't need to be connected to watch it, although if you have pre-booked a programme you need to connect to the internet initially to download the licence once the programme is delivered.
Once BBC iPlayer Desktop is installed on your computer, click on the Download button by the programme and BBC iPlayer will start downloading it. Once the programme has saved onto your computer, you have 30 days to watch it, and you can save as many programmes as you like, depending on your computer's capacity. If you favourite a programme, all other current and future episodes of that programme will be automatically downloaded unless you select otherwise.
To download programmes you need to be in the UK – though there is guidance if you're incorrectly told that you're not.
